Don't Know What To Get For Your Dad? Why Not An Amazon Gift Card? |
Garmin nuvi 255W GPS
If you are looking for a high-tech gadget as a Christmas gift for your dad, the Garmin nuvi 255W GPS should be the number 1 on your list.
There are at least a couple dozen different models of GPS available. The Garmin nuvi line has proven to be the most reliable and has the most functionality. But in terms of value, the nuvi 255W wins hands down for its affordable price and numerous features that comes with the package.
I personally own a Garmin nuvi 255W for over 7 months now and absolutely love it. I purchased it through Amazon after my trusted Garmin iQue 360 broke down on me as when I first moved to a different state and totally relied on the GPS to find my way around town. I was very surprised with how ease of use the nuvi 255W is. The wide 4.3-inch screen is big and clear even under bright daylight. The voice instruction is excellent. Unlike my old iQue 360 which only tell you to “turn left” or “turn right,” the nuvi 255W actually tells you the name of the street.

The pre-loaded maps are quite up-to-date. I live in a new subdivision that is not on Google Map or Mapquest yet. I have had several delivery guys told me they couldn’t find my house on their GPS. But I can find it on nuvi 255W without any problem.
Another notable improvement is the nuvi 255W finds satellite much faster thanks to it’s Hotfix feature. It remembers your last location and use that as a reference point so it doesn’t take as much time to determine your current location.
I also like the big “Go Home” button on the menu. This allows you to store the location of your home (or any places you visit the most). Then, from anywhere you can simply push the “Go Home” button it will route you back home.
It has a SD slot to let you add a SD card for your own maps and guide. You can also upload geo-coded photo and do photo navigation, or connect it to your computer via USB port and download maps from Google Map or Mapquest although I have not use these features myself yet.
If you do decide to get one, be sure to also get the Portable Friction Mount. The included windshield mount suction cup works but you would hate it because the GPS obstructs the view. The friction mount works very well. It does hold the GPS in its place. And if you have more than one car it also allows you to easily move the nuvi from one vehicle to another.
Granted the nuvi 255W doesn’t have the bells and whistles such as Bluetooth but it’s got more than sufficient features for your day-to-day navigation use; and you can’t really beat the price either.
